To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter 4 Summary/Study Guide -Thomas & Andrej

In this chapter of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout recalls how dull her school days flew by through her first year at school. Nothing changed from the first day: she continued to be agitated towards Miss Caroline who carried the misconception that Scout has been taught by her father how to do her work such as reading. Being let out of school half an hour earlier than her brother, Jem, Scout travels back home by herself. One day, while scout was taking her trip home, as always, she runs past by the two live oaks in front of the Radley house, but this time something caught her eyes. In a hole of one of the oaks, she discovers two pieces of tin foil wrapped gum. Knowing that gum is very rare at the time during the Great Depression, she carefully takes the pieces home to show her loot to her brother let to come home. Dumbfounded and furious at his sister's lack of suspecting the mysterious findings, he orders her to discard them since she can get sick. Desperate to keep hold of her loot, Scout points out the place she found but eventually spits them out of her mouth to avoid a quarrel with Calpurnia. A few days after the mysterious incident summer came, but into the summer came another finding from the specific tree hole: old valuable pennies, Indian heads, known to bring good luck such as long life and wealthiness. Strange leftovers were not the only things that came to the young children during the summer, by definition: "summer" means Dill to Scout and Jem.Dill came one day after the children were let out of school for vacation. The summer from then on was filled games and reenacting of movies, and stories of Hot Steams. Their horse plays one day led to the accident of Scout rolling in a tire down a hill smacking into the front door of the Radley house. After the incident, curiosity and childishness led them to connect reenacting the life story of Arthur "Boo" Radley, the malevolent spirit of the Radley residence.

Setting: Takes place in the surrounding area of the Finch residence and the Radley residence.

Major (dynamic) Changes in Characters:

Calpurnia: Became lessaggressivetowards Scout for her mistakes and begins to acknowledge her as an independent person now. Shows many signs of loneliness throughout the chapter, may be due to Scout moving on to school and no one being there to pester her about this and that.
Atticus: He seems to now be appearing more on scenes and in the earlier chapters we found that he did not appear so much when the kids were horsing around Arthur "Boo" Radley's house
